The Ritual Table: A Place of Memory; A State of Mind

Prospectus:  An exhibition of functional and non-functional ceramic serviceware relating to the theme:  The Ritual Table: A Place of Memory; A State of Mind.
Countless ceramics concepts, methods, and principles relate to how an individual artist may perceive and conceptualize this theme.
Creative submissions are encouraged; including, but not limited to, serving vats, vessels, vials, beakers, bins, bottles, bowls, utensils, dishes, ewers, firkins, flasks, etc. 


Eligibility: Open to national artists at least 18 years of age


Exhibition Dates: February 9 Ė 24, 2018


Delivery of Work: January 29 Ė February 3, 2018


Opening Reception: February 9, 2018, 5-7 PM


Submission Requirements:

∑       Enter up to three digital images and three detail shots. Please note that the number #1 image submitted may be used for publicity purposes.

∑       Include up to three different recipes that in some way relate to the submitted artwork and the exhibition theme, The Ritual Table: A Place of Memory; A State of Mind

∑       Work submitted must be innovative and original in design and must be a personal expression of the artistís intent.

∑       Work submitted through the application process must be the actual works that will be displayed during the exhibition. If submitting images of place settings, please expect to send a single set of the place settings if that work is selected for the exhibition.

∑       Works must be made entirely out of ceramic materials (exceptions are limited to handles, knobs or other accents made out of cane, wood, wire etc., that are an integral part of the piece).

∑       Work submitted for review must have been completed by the artist within the past four (4) years, and not previously shown within the Corning-Elmira region.

∑       Size restrictions: each piece or set may not exceed 30 inches in any dimension or 20 pounds in weight.

∑       Accepted work that displays poor craftsmanship or does not represent the pieces submitted as digital entries will be withdrawn from the exhibition.

∑       All ceramic work entered must be for sale. The artist receives 70% of the price. 171 will collect and remit all applicable taxes.

∑       Sale proceeds will be paid to the artist within 30 business days following the close of the exhibition (no later than April 6).


Shipping & Insurance: The artist is responsible for shipping and insuring the work to and from 171 Cedar Arts Centerís Houghton Gallery. 171 is responsible for insurance during the exhibition. When you ship your piece(s) for the exhibition, you must also include a pre-

paid UPS or FedEx return shipping label for the return shipping of your piece(s).  If no return shipping label is enclosed, the work will not be shipped back to you. Pieces not sold during the exhibition will be returned in their original packaging. Local artists may arrange to hand-deliver accepted work and retrieve unsold work.


Marketing: The exhibition will be marketed through 171ís website (www.171CedarArts.org), event postcards, and local print media.


Sales & Insurance:  All work must be available for sale. 171 retains 30% commission of the price. Insurance covering work during the exhibit will be set at 70% of value. 171 will not be responsible for loss or damage to work in transit to or from 171. All accepted work that is not sold during the exhibition must either be picked up by the artist, or it will be shipped back to the artist, with a pre-paid UPS or FedEx return shipping lable, within 30 business days of the exhibition. If artwork is to be picked up rather than shipped, 171 will not be responsible for loss, theft, or damaged work after 14 days of the last day of the exhibit.


Application:  Deadline for submissions is January 13, 2018

∑       Include a return UPS or Fedex shipping label.

∑       Artistsí works will be selected based on the submission of a maximum of three (3) functional ceramic pieces or sets shown in three separate digital images, with an option to add one detail shot for each piece or set submitted.

∑       Each professional quality image must be in JPEG (.jpg) format, 300 DPI, 1920 x 1920. Low resolution images (smaller than 300 dpi) are not guaranteed to be included in the printed promotional materials associated with the exhibit. We recommend submitting high resolution images.
