Women's Chorale at 171 Spring Concert: A Cycle of Psalms

4/8/17 4-5pm, Christ Episcopal Church, 33 East First Street, in Corning

Come join the Women’s Chorale @ 171 Cedar as we sing a masterpiece of music for treble voices, A Cycle of Psalms by Cecilia Clare Bocard, Sister of Providence.

Sr. Cecilia was born and raised in New Albany, Indiana. Sent by her sisters in the Order of Providence, she studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in 1961 in Paris. She returned and lived with the community of the Sisters of Providence at Saint-Mary-in-the-Woods where she not only composed choral and keyboard works but also taught music. Writing for her sisters, she gained a deep understanding about how to write for women singers.

She wrote A Cycle of Psalms to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Sisters of Providence moving from France to America. A tour de force for women singers, the accompaniment is vivacious and brilliant. First performed in Chicago in 1956, the piece remained unknown except for a few performances at Saint Xavier College in the 1990s. Doreen Alsen, director of the Women’s Chorale @ 171 Cedar Arts Center brought the work to the east coast in 2013 with a performance in Ithaca. The April 8 performance will be the second time this wonderful music is performed on the entire east coast.

Rounding out the concert are Jerusalem by Michael McGlynn and You Are the New Day, written for the King’s Singers, but performed by the gifted ladies of the Women’s Chorale @ 171 Cedar, and led by Director Doreen Alsen.

Concert is free and open to the public; donations accepted.
