Incantation: Works on Paper and Mixed Media Sculpture by Gigi Alvaré

171 Cedar Arts Center is pleased to announce the opening of Incantation: Works on Paper and Mixed Media Sculpture by Gigi Alvaré on Friday, September 12, 2014 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Houghton Gallery located at 155 Cedar Street (corner of First and Cedar Streets),  Corning, NY. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Alvaré's work evokes the phenomenon of movement as expressed in human experience, the body, memory and emotion using a fusion of ink and pastels on paper. The series is a post-modern invocation - more revelation than narrative, more rhizomatic than linear, moving from subconscious to conscious, unformed to formed, abstract to concrete.

Alvaré is a visual artist, performer and writer. Her artwork has been exhibited throughout New York State:

  • Abrons Art Center of the Henry Street Settlement, New York City
  • Barret Art Center, Poughkeepsie
  • Deep Listening Space, Kingston
  • Tivoli Artist's Co-op, Tivoli
  • Arnot Art Museum, Elmira
  • Community Arts of Elmira
  • 171 Cedar Arts Center's Houghton Gallery, Corning

She has created large visual elements for the Statue of Liberty Centennial Celebration and the Village Halloween Parade, New York City.

Through the Touchstone Center for Children, she has written and performed numerous plays presented at:

  • Brooklyn Museum
  • Belvedere Castle, Central Park
  • New York Historical Society, New York City

Currently the Director of Education at the Rockwell Museum in Corning, New York, Alvaré has worked extensively in arts-in- education school programs, both in New York City and the Hudson River Valley since 1984.

The exhibit is open September 12 through October 24, 2014. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 9 am - 9 pm, Friday 9 am - 8 pm, and Saturday 9 am - 1 pm.
