Hands On Culinary Skills

Roll up your sleeves, wash your hands, and get down to business! These classes focus on building your culinary skills through hands on experience, rather than our lecture based demos. Classes will run yearlong and are designed with time in mind! Pick up some new skills in our 2 hour culinary workshops!

Learn how to make both of these classic chowders and why they are different! History lesson: At one point the state of Maine made it illegal to put carrots in chowder while it was legal in Manhattan and Rhode Island. Chef David Phelps will share all as you make your chowder and work with fellow to make these hearty and filling soups.

Learn how to properly prepare sushi rice, use a rolling mat to make a vegetarian roll and a shrimp or tuna roll. Chef David Phelps will also show you how to make a delicious dipping sauce to pair with your sushi.
We won't be working with raw fish for safety reasons, but you can purchase sushi grade fish and use these skills to make your own sushi at home!

Looking to add interest to your meals with some new and usual grains? Chef David Phelps will show you some super nutritious grains that don't receive credit in the mainstream. We'll try bulghur wheat in a tabouli salad, make a quinoa salad, try freekah pilaf and if there's time make a barley risotto!

Culinary Demo Series

Join us Saturday afternoons to taste, learn, and be inspired. Each of our demonstration-style classes is limited to 25 students. All demos are held in the Drake House Studio Theater starting at 11:00AM and ending no later than 2:00PM. Samples of each plate or beverage will be shared with the audience.
